Kay is a second generation Greek originally from Grosse Pointe, Michigan. She learned to baked and work early in life from her hard-working mom and dad. Both were small business owners on the east side of Detroit.

Duane is of Danish ancestry. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and played football for the Badgers from 1972-1975. He learned to bake from his mom and grandma and while working on a dairy farm in his native Nebraska as a young teenager. He is also from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, where he met Kay in high school.

So after high school and college at Wisconsin, Kay and Duane did the corporate thing with Procter and Gamble in Chicago, Kayser-Roth Corporation in Greensboro, North Carolina and the Coca-Cola Company in Chicago and St. Louis.

St. Louis and Webster Groves was the best family environment to raise their three daughters, Amy, Emily and Grace, so they stayed and opened Breadsmith in October 1999.
